To be a great DJ, you need to cultivate your musical palate. That means being familiar with the classics so that you can understand how music evolved to where we are today. But you shouldn’t run off and listen to Beethoven. Here are five genres that matter, with some of the best acts from each.

1. Rock N’ Roll: This branch of modern music is arguably most important. It brought together element from country, the blues and gospel music to create a global sensation. From the ’50s onwards the electric guitar was the front instrument, supplemented with a bass, drum kit, and maybe another guitar. You should know Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Cream. From these five bands, you will probably discover what appeals to you best, and learn about other contemporaries, delving deeper into the classics.

2. R&B: This genre of music also emerged about sixty years ago. It branched off from rock ‘n’ roll when artists like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke came to prominence. More continually shifting, R&B eventually spawned Soul and Motown, an entirely different era of music in which artists like James Brown and Marvin Gaye dominated. By the ’70s, funk had emerged, and by the ’80s it had morphed into hip-hop. This genre usually relies on a fusion of instruments; a call and response style of singing; blue notes, which bridge major and minor chords; and a backbeat that offers a definitive rhythm.

3. Electronic: This style of music is much more prevalent today than any other. Most rock bands today have an electronic keyboard; hip-hop and contemporary R&B uses electronic production; and synthesizers, laptops and other professional DJ equipment are commonplace for many performers. Armin van Buren is one of the world’s most popular DJs today, but the forefathers of the movement are Daft Punk, Kraftwerk, and Francis Grasso, all acts that represent different eras of electronic music.

These three genres form the basis for most of the contemporary music coming out of professional DJ equipment these days. It’s important to stay up with all the new music being produced so that you can continue to impress your fans. Online publications like Rolling Stone or Pitchfork have album reviews and singles available so that you can gauge what is popular and what you want to incorporate into your own professional audio mixer. With all the new music coming out it can be hard to stay up with the constant output, but if music is your passion you will easily be able to dedicate time to exploring and discovering new bands.
